"The best way to learn vocabulary is through extensive and varied reading. But students preparing for examinations such as the SAT —even if they are avid readers—often need a review of the lexical items that reappear in academic literature, especially if they are preparing for entrance examinations.  These words tend to reappear in college entrance examinations and are indispensable if students are to make sense not only of academic reading but also the kinds of items found on standardized tests.  William Shin’s book Mastering Core SAT Words is ideal for students looking to review core vocabulary.

The chapters are concise; the word lists manageable for someone working in self-study. Shin’s definitions are to the point and his examples help to clarify word meanings.  He often uses appositives, for example, to help students see the meaning of the word.  Words are asterisked to help students identify those words that pose more difficulty.

Shin has many years’ experience working with students to prepare them for standardized examinations—and it shows in this book.  There are exercises for students to complete and—while I wish they were more varied—they do focus the student on the word to be mastered.  This book is a very helpful study guide for students looking to review and reinforce core college level vocabulary."

“For many foreign students who set their goal to study in the United States, TOEFL iBT is a major challenge in the process of application to the academic institutions. Mastering Core TOEFL iBT/ TOEIC Words with William H. Shin, is a rigorous training book which goes beyond its given objective of assisting students in training to achieve high scores in TOEFL iBT. The vocabulary section is clear and concise. The examples of use are not only helpful in understanding the words, but can be used to understand contents of what students face once they begin their student life in the U.S.  Examples of use relate to popular areas of study for most foreign students. Format is well-designed as a drill-based reference wordbook. Following the daily menu will strengthen awareness and response, as the organization of each drill exercise is designed to cover whole spectrum of the vocabulary. Mastering Core TOEFL iBT/ TOEIC Words with William H. Shin is a well thought out inspirational wordbook created by an author who applied his wisdom, personal experience and his knowledge as a scholar of English language.”

"A great vocabulary book that improved my reading and writing score by 100 points! I wouldn't have gotten a high score on SAT without studying SAT words. Even though SAT is only a portion of your college admission, it is the most basic requirement that you need to meet. Studying for it is essential and crucial for the future you want to achieve. Study when you can, or you will regret later in your life for sure."
